Why Rattana

The case for choosing
with some care.

Watch servicing is not a commodity. The difference in outcome between a careful, informed technician and a hurried one can be significant — and is not always apparent until later.

In detail

What this means in practice

Expertise that comes from focused work

Rattana focuses solely on watch repair and restoration. This is not a jewellery shop that also does batteries and adjustments on the side. The people working here spend their days on movements, dials, and cases — which means they encounter a wide range of conditions and have developed a feel for what different situations actually require.

Prem Rattana trained formally in horological work before opening the workshop, and Niran Kiatying brings specific experience in case and dial assessment. Between them, the workshop covers both the internal mechanics of a watch and the visible surfaces that define its character.

A process with no hidden steps

Every watch is logged at intake with a detailed condition note. Assessment happens before any work begins. The cost is stated and agreed before we touch the movement. If something unexpected arises during disassembly, work stops and you are contacted before anything is done.

This is not a complicated policy — it is simply what responsible watch servicing looks like. Owners who have had watches returned in worse condition than they were dropped off, or received unexpected bills, will recognise why this matters.

Service that treats the owner as a participant

For restoration work especially, your preferences shape what we do. We do not assume a watch should be polished to a mirror finish or that a worn dial should be replaced. If you want the piece to look as it did before it was put away twenty years ago, that is a reasonable preference and we will work toward it.

For sentimental restorations, photographs are taken at each significant stage so you can see what was found and what was done. The finished watch is returned with a written summary and practical guidance on ongoing care.

Straightforward pricing with no additions

Our service prices are stated clearly and cover the full scope of that service. A movement overhaul at ฿9,200 does not become ฿12,000 because of parts we decided to replace without asking. If a part needs replacing, this is discussed first and agreed before proceeding.

The cost of careful watch care is real, and we do not obscure it. What we offer is that the quoted amount stays the quoted amount barring something discovered that genuinely could not have been known without disassembly — and in that case, the conversation happens before the work does.

Results measured before the watch leaves

After reassembly, movements are run on a timegrapher and the results are noted — rate, amplitude, beat error across positions. Where adjustments can be made to improve performance, they are. You are told what the readings were and what was achievable given the movement's age and condition.

Where seals have been replaced, water resistance is pressure tested before return. The result of that test is included in the service record.

What makes us different

Three things that are harder to find

01

Sentimental restoration as a specific service

Most workshops offer servicing. Very few structure a dedicated path for watches that carry personal significance — where the conversation about what to preserve or change is as important as the technical work. Rattana does this as a defined service with its own process and timeline.

02

A workshop you can visit and observe

No appointment is needed to visit. You are welcome to see the workshop, ask about processes, and have a watch assessed in person before committing to anything. This kind of access is less common than it should be, and we think it builds the right kind of relationship with clients.

03

Phuket-based with full local service

Watches sent to Bangkok or abroad for service face logistics, time, and uncertainty about who is actually handling the work. At Rattana, the person whose name is on the door is the person working on your watch — on Thalang Road, a short walk from the old town.
